Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Mary J. Blige, Mudbound

Hong Chau, Downsizing

Alison Janney, I, Tonya

Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird

Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

Winner: Once again, this is a two-way race between Alison Janney and Laurie Metcalf, and choosing between them almost feels like choosing between Mexican food and Italian food. It’s. Fucking. Tough. Janney is scenery-chewing, cigarette smoking, fire-breathing she-demon of a mother in I, Tonya, while Metcalf’s version of maternal love is still imperfect and biting at times, but definitely more relatable in her portrayal of the challenges of being a mother to a mouthy, ungrateful teenager. They’re both so effing solid, I don’t know how to choose. But Metcalf’s performance struck more of a chord with me in my soul and bowels; this is a mother a lot of us know and grew up with. It was genuine and organic and raw without the benefit of getting to be flashy, which I think is the harder job here. So, I’m gonna give it to an incredibly deserving Laurie Metcalf.

Editor-in-Chief - I'm overworked in the tech industry and started this charming little blog so I could rant about movies, tv, pop culture, politics, and whatever the hell else I feel like talking about. I've conquered Comic-Con many times, and my love for Star Wars is a little bit embarrassing. I'm also hungry all the time.
